01 · Solar panels
Free power from your roof.
A typical Macclesfield semi can generate most of its daytime electricity from the roof. Tap the points to see what's up there.

430W all-black panels
Sixteen monocrystalline panels. Each one has 108 half-cut cells, so if a chimney shadow covers one half, the other half keeps producing.
≈ 5,900 kWh a year in CheshireWhy the angle matters
This roof faces south-west at about 35°. In the UK that captures around 95% of the best possible output. East and west roofs work too, just spread across the day.
35° pitch, south-westHooks, rails and clamps
Stainless steel hooks slip under the tiles and bolt to the rafters, so nothing is drilled through your roof. Aluminium rails and clamps hold every panel against storm-force winds.
No holes in the tilesWhere the cables go
Two DC cable runs travel through UV-proof conduit into the loft and down to the inverter. There's an isolator at each end, so the system can be made safe in seconds.
Isolated at both ends02 · Air source heat pump
Warmth, pulled out of thin air.
A heat pump replaces your gas boiler and heats your home and hot water for a fraction of the running cost. Here's what's going on inside the box.

Fan and evaporator
A slow-turning fan draws outside air across thin aluminium fins. The refrigerant inside boils at around -25°C, so it can soak up heat even on a frosty January morning.
Works down to -20°CInverter compressor
Squeezing the refrigerant raises its temperature to around 55°C for your radiators and hot water. It speeds up and slows down to match demand, rather than switching on and off.
1 kWh in, about 4 kWh of heat outAnti-vibration brackets
The unit sits on rubber-isolated wall brackets so any hum stays outside, not in your bedroom. At three metres it's roughly as loud as a kitchen fridge.
≈ 40 dB at 3 mCondensate tray
In cold, damp weather the fins frost over, so the unit runs short defrost cycles. The meltwater drains through this heated tray to a soakaway, so it never freezes on your path.
Heated drain, no icy patches03 · Home battery
Store the sunshine for tonight.
A battery soaks up spare solar and cheap overnight electricity, then runs the house through the expensive evening peak. This is what a tidy install looks like.

Hybrid inverter
The brain of the system. It turns DC from the panels and battery into AC for your home, and decides every second whether to use, store or export energy. The screen and app show it all live.
8 kW hybridAC protection
Dedicated breakers and surge protection sit between the inverter and your main fuse board, so every circuit can be switched off safely, to the latest wiring regulations.
BS 7671 compliantDC isolator and fuses
Battery cables carry a lot of current, so they run through a fused isolator. One switch disconnects the whole battery bank for servicing.
One-switch shutdownLiFePO4 battery modules
Four 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate modules: the safest lithium chemistry, with no cobalt and a very low fire risk. They're built to last well over a decade of daily use.

Charging at home on an off-peak tariff can cost a fraction of the price per mile of petrol. Here's what makes a good home charger.

7.4 kW smart charger
Adds around 30 miles of range per hour. Plug in when you get home and it waits for the cheapest tariff window, or soaks up spare solar during the day.
≈ 30 miles per hourBuilt-in fault protection
If the supply's earth connection ever fails, the charger cuts power in milliseconds. That means no earth rod to dig into your garden, so installs are quick and tidy.
No earth rod neededType 2 connector
The standard plug for every new electric car in the UK. It locks into the car while charging and only releases when the car says it's safe.
Fits every UK EVTethered cable
A 5 metre cable stays attached to the charger, so there's no fishing a cable out of the boot on a wet evening. It wraps neatly round the unit afterwards.
